Eriskay

In the cemetery on Eriskay you can see an amazing array of eclectic and well nourished crosses - all facing landward as tradition demands. St Kilda not so much. They mostly used unmarked stones - as something ancient.

The blackhouses had no chimney. Smoke from the fire sealed the cracks in the windowless space that was entered by crawling through a tunnel. That opening became increasingly less hygenic as the winter months rolled 0n. You can see the original blackhouses in between the newer ones as you wander down the village street. They did in fact last for hundreds of years.

In 1861 wealthy benefactor Sir Thomas Acland gave money (£21) to build new houses with a sea view - which quickly fell apart in the wind and rain. Spare parts such as roofing and windows were far to the East. From above the village you realise the darker older homes have more sheltered entrances, all facing a different and more streamlined direction. They knew something.
